Overview

For generations, neighborhood movie theaters have been more than places to watch films. They’ve been gathering places where families make traditions, friends reconnect, and communities come together to experience great stories.

Ashbrie Cinemas has built its reputation on exactly that experience. As the independently owned family behind The Ridge, The Breeze, and The Marquis, they offer the warmth of a local theater with the comfort and amenities audiences expect today.

As the company continued to grow, it became clear their visual identity no longer reflected who they had become. The existing branding felt dated, lacked consistency across applications, and failed to communicate that all three theaters belonged to the same family.

Our goal was to create a brand that honored the nostalgia of neighborhood cinemas while positioning Ashbrie Cinemas for the future.

The Challenge

The previous identity presented several challenges.

Each theater had established its own recognition within the community, but very few people realized they were all part of Ashbrie Cinemas. Instead of strengthening the parent brand, the individual theaters stood largely on their own.

The logo itself also created practical limitations. Its complexity made it difficult to reproduce consistently across signage, merchandise, print, and digital applications.

Perhaps most importantly, the existing film strip icon no longer reflected the movie-going experience. Today’s theaters are fully digital, and relying on imagery tied to traditional film risked positioning Ashbrie as an independent art house or revival theater rather than the modern neighborhood cinema it truly is.

The new identity needed to unify three locations, modernize the brand, and reinforce what made Ashbrie Cinemas different from national chains.

Strategy

During discovery, one insight quickly became clear.

Ashbrie Cinemas wasn’t trying to compete by becoming another multiplex. Their greatest strength was being something national brands cannot, and, they are local.

They know their communities, and they serve generations of moviegoers. They offer a familiar experience where guests feel like neighbors instead of ticket numbers.

That insight became the foundation of the entire rebrand.

Rather than chasing trends, we embraced timeless design inspired by the golden era of neighborhood cinemas. The objective wasn’t to create something nostalgic for nostalgia’s sake. It was to capture the sense of excitement, familiarity, and community that has always defined the local movie theater.

A Timeless Identity

The new logo draws inspiration from mid-century theater marquees, vintage neon signage, and classic cinema typography.

At the center of the identity is a custom wordmark that feels both familiar and enduring.

One of the defining details is the extended crossbar of the “A,” which becomes a shooting star.

Rather than referencing celebrity culture or Hollywood fame, the shooting star celebrates the sense of wonder found throughout cinema itself. It evokes adventure, imagination, science fiction, fairy tales, and the timeless idea of wishing upon a star. It’s a subtle reminder that movies have always invited us to dream beyond everyday life.

The color palette also bridges the past and the future. We intentionally stayed close to Ashbrie’s existing colors to preserve brand recognition while assigning a unique accent color to each theater. This approach creates distinction for The Ridge, The Breeze, and The Marquis while reinforcing that they all belong to one unified family.

One Family, Three Theaters

Creating the Ashbrie Cinemas logo was only part of the solution.

We also developed a complete identity system for each theater.

Using consistent typography, color relationships, and visual structure, each location maintains its own personality while clearly connecting back to the Ashbrie Cinemas brand through the “Ashbrie Cinemas Presents” signature.

Supporting elements, including custom iconography, patterns, textures, and brand standards, extend the identity across every customer touchpoint, creating a cohesive experience regardless of which theater guests visit.

Collaboration

From our first discovery meeting, it was clear we shared the same vision.

Ashbrie Cinemas wanted to celebrate the charm of the neighborhood theater while creating a brand that could confidently stand alongside today’s national chains.

The collaborative nature of the project allowed us to move quickly from strategy into creative exploration. Most of our refinement centered on typography, carefully adjusting proportions and details until the identity felt timeless, distinctive, and unmistakably Ashbrie.

The identity was further reinforced through a series of cinematic brand spots produced by Calliope Films, extending the visual language beyond print and signage into motion.

The Result

The new identity has recently launched and has already received a positive response from both the client and the community.

Because Ashbrie Cinemas is an established local brand, the rollout will continue over time as signage and environmental graphics are updated across all three locations. Even in these early stages, the project has already achieved its primary objectives.

The new identity unifies three theaters under one recognizable brand, modernizes the visual language without abandoning its heritage, and reinforces Ashbrie Cinemas as the neighborhood theater experience that sets it apart from national chains.

More importantly, it gives the organization a brand system designed to grow with them for years to come.

A Brand Worth Coming Back To

One of the most rewarding parts of this project was discovering how strategy could become storytelling.

When branding reflects an authentic story, it creates recognition, builds trust, and strengthens the connection between a business and the community it serves.

That’s exactly what this rebrand was designed to do.
